Our Soundscene
From the 60’s to early 90’s (although we do go further back) Woking and south throughout the GU-postcode area had a vibrant music scene. This ‘site’ unearths the bands and the venues that have faded into obscurity – and a few who have not – that blessed or just plain bombarded our ears, eyes and hearts.
If Phil Gibby had not invited me to contribute to the Soundscene column in the Woking News & Mail in the late ’80s and then set up the Facebook Group called Soundscene Does Facebook in 2009 and asked a simple question of a few of us who were involved in the Soundscene music column, I do not believe any of this would have happened.
In compiling this record I am eternally grateful to the members of that Facebook group and other individuals and organizations, who are my host of contributors knowingly or otherwise, many of whom are now past and missed greatly and others who are still active in music to this day. I extend my thanks to: Mark Applin, Steve Baker, Bruno Bannerman, John Berry, Blag Promotions, Martin Blogg, British Library Board, Andrew Neil Brown, C86 & All That, Pete Cole, Ben Darnton, Paul Denison, Paul Dreczko, Gareth Ellis, Phil Gibby, Alan Gowan, Steve Hack, Dan Hiscocks, Robert Horrocks, John Hudson, Du Kane, Inga Leru-Kelly, Malvern Rock Archive, Steve McKeown, Mick Mercer, Phill Mintram, Jerry Morgan, Steve Porter, Raz Razzle, Celia Reed, Adam Russel, Joe Smith, Steven Smith, Sid Stovold, Surrey History Centre, Heather Tipton, Paul Trew, Barry Williams, Mark Andrew Woolford, Malcolm Wyatt and the many more contributors who requested not to be named and I’m sure a few I’ve forgotten in the years it has taken.
We are always happy to hear, see, read your memories and images of memorabilia for GU postcode based bands, venues, studios, fanzines, labels, etc. Simply reach out to us via the comments or via Twitter and Facebook.
